After Holi, Huranga!

a24.3.14.jpg
Huranga is a celebration held at the Daruji Temple in Mathura, south of New Delhi, one day after Holi the Festival of Colours.

The game is played between men and women: men drench women with liquid colour, while women tear off the clothes of men.

Although the look of it is somewhat weird for Western onlookers, with the red colour resembling blood, the idea behind the celebration is one of joy and love.

It is the one time of the year were people of all casts get together as one to shower paint on each other. Huranga is a massive catharsis, a silent massive exchange of feelings, of internal cleansing, of passionately letting go and again coming back to one's Self in preparation for the New Year ahead.
