Mending Socks, A Revolution

Life has change a lot in the last few decades. But looking back to a pre-comuper era, there are a few things we shouldn't forget.

Our grandparents used to go out for a walk. Just like that. For the pleasure in itself of having a stroll through city or country, and not rushing from one place to another. A great way to clear the mind and relax the body.

They cooked from scratch. It takes time, this is undeniable, but the advantage are on the plane of health and economy. Of money, if not of time.

They took the time to write letters. And no, an email is not the same. A letter requires concentration, care for the best form in which to express things, and the beautiful act of handwriting - that is to impress your identity to a sheet of paper of your choice. A highly personalized object, letters are written to be kept.

Clothes were bought with the idea of making them last. Quality meant also a careful selection of the fabrics, that had to be natural, durable, beautiful. Few things of best quality instead of a heap of cheap stuff, to be replaced within weeks, thrown away and ending in mountains of waste. "Mend your socks" could be the motto of a new revolution that opposes consumerism. A silent, peaceful way to say to the world that we are more than just buying machines for someone else's profit.
