The Damask Rose

Rosa damascena is the name of the particular type of rose plant known from ancient times. "The Rose" par excellence, it has been praised from the East to the West through the centuries for its properties.

Anti-HIV, antibacterial, antioxidant, antitussive, hypnotic, anti diabetic, and relaxant effect on tracheal chains have been reported for this plant. The Damask rose is still cultivated as an ornamental plant but also for using in perfume, medicine and food industry.

Its essential oil is one of the most expensive in the world due to its rarity.

Rosa damascena extract has also been used as cough syrup, to treat reflux, as a laxative, and to reduce blood sugar. The oil is said to treat depression, grief and stress. It also may have benefits for wound healing, allergies, skin conditions and headaches.

Rose water, simply obtained by soaking dried rose petals in water and leaving the mixture in the sun for 2 days, has many uses. Gargling with it can alleviate a sore throat. It is refreshing and hydrating in the summer heat. It helps digestion and improves the mood. Splashed on your face, it will have anti ageing properties, lightening dark spots and tightening pores. And it is very, very pleasant to handle.
