Your Identity In A Scar

a2.7.14.jpg
It is called scarification, or cicatrization. It is a very ancient way to declare your identity, but still used in many cultures of the world.
Levi-Strauss described the body as a surface waiting for the imprintation of culture. Anthropology studied extensively the meanings coded by its many forms.
Marks on the skin can be obtained in several ways, all aimed to get a permanent sign that will forever declare that particular individual as part of a community. Like an identity card, it is still considered a necessary passage to get the full status of man or woman in many parts of Africa.
What remains debatable is whether these marks, which often imply a traumatic and painful experience, are a cultural right or a form of violence on the individual. A consent as an adult is a guarantee of freedom of choice, but if it is about children the scenario changes.
Critics say that no one should interfere with the bodily wholeness of another person. Defendants claim the right of different culture to assert their values. The views are deeply different and unlikely to find an agreement.
