Archetypal and transpersonal psychology in the Book of Changes (I Ching)

Some time ago, in late August, I received the visit of a lucid young psychology student, Stefano Andreoli, here in Treia. Needless to say, some of the topics of discussion during his stay focused on psychological archetypes and innate tendencies, linked to the elemental and energetic aspects present in nature and in man.

I have always had a soft spot for studying psychology. In the past I have also written articles on the correlation between psychoanalysis and the Book of Changes (I Ching), as well as on transpersonal psychology and the theories of the deep self close to the Advaita philosophy of India.

Furthermore, I have often and willingly started discussions and exchanges of views with friends psychiatrists, psychologists and psychotherapists ... sometimes opposing the technical vision of current science with a holistic and psychosomatic vision.

In the psychological analysis of the subjects treated, in my opinion, it is necessary to keep in mind that understanding the psychic states examined in the "observed" individual requires a good dose of admixture and empathy, that is, the psychologist must also be a little "intriguing and speculative ".

Intriguing derives from intrigue (machination, plot, understanding, etc.) this word expresses a lot of double meanings, sometimes it is used in the positive sense, as an intriguing thing is interesting, varied, fun, attractive ... or in the negative sense which means confused, cunning, with hidden implications, etc. The term Speculation expresses another typical aspect of analysis, besides that of mirroring oneself ... also investigation, research, reflection, pretext ...

Empathy and transference are necessary for understanding the games of the mind, the sharing and the recognition of sharing all the aspects examined, this is the only way - according to me - to be able to find solutions to the imbalances and dysfunctions of the psyche. Therefore the psychotherapist also performs a priestly, shamanic function ... and this is not a heretical attitude ... rather this attitude allows to bring healing elements ... On the contrary, where there is the assumption of health in the observer and the recognition of insanity in the observed , a sort of exploitation of the "disease" and of falsified medical-therapeutic use take over ...

In fact, all human beings are equal, nobody has the right to consider himself a human being superior to another. Who plays a recognized role in society is always a person, on a par with any other. Even those who judge can be judged and those who play roles in a category that is presumed to want to deepen the knowledge of the mind should first respect the principles of which it guarantees.

Since I personally am not a psychologist nor a doctor all my conclusions on the psyche do not draw on a scientist matrix .. I limit myself to the study of archetypes according to the zodiacal and astrological models (in the various sauces and strands). And as anticipated one of my favorite texts, for the analysis of the space / time qualities (necessary to understand the characteristics of beings), is the Book of Changes. Below are the images and the description of the present seasonal moment (month of the Rooster) which corresponds to Hexagram 12 P’I (il Ristagno), from August 22 to September 22.

Bad people are not propitious

To the perseverance of the noble.

The great goes away,

the little one comes.

Comment. Heaven and Earth no longer communicate with each other and all things stagnate. Upper and lower are not in relationship, and disorder and disorder reign on earth. Inside there is the dark force, outside the light one. Inside there is weakness, outside hardness. The ignoble are inside and the nobles outside.

The street of the ignobles is on the rise the way of the nobles in decline. But the nobles don't let themselves be shaken in their principles. When they have no chance of influencing society, they remain faithful to their nature and retire in secrecy.

The image.

Heaven and Earth do not come together:

the image of stagnation.

Thus the noble withdraws into his inner worth

In order not to become corrupt in difficulties.

He does not allow himself to be honored with prerogatives.

Comment. The meaning of not being honored with appannaggi is that the noble refuses material compensation from the government of the ignoble. In fact, when mistrust reigns in public life following the influence exercised by the ignoble, any fruitful operation is impossible, because the foundation is wrong. Therefore in such cases the nobleman does not allow himself to be seduced by lucrative offers to take part in the public activities decided by the ignoble, thus not giving his assent to their baseness. Therefore the nobleman hides his merits and withdraws in solitude.

Comment on the third line: "They are ashamed." Following the behavior of the nobleman who does not corroborates the actions of the ignoble, who rose to the government with artifice, they - without openly showing it - begin to be ashamed of their baseness. This is the beginning of the change.
