Do You Get Enough Calcium?

We all know calcium is essential for healthy bones and teeth, but did you know it's just as vital for adults as it is for children?

Calcium is crucial for energy, muscle function and normal blood clotting in children and adults alike, and not only while our bones and teeth are developing.

The daily dose for an adult is 700mg a day, that equates to three servings of dairy, such as a 200ml glass of milk, a matchbox-sized piece of cheese and a small pot of yogurt.

There are specific indicators that can hint to a calcium deficiency. For example if you're tired all the time and struggle to wake up in the morning. Calcium helps release energy from your food, so if you aren't consuming enough of the mineral you may feel more tired than normal.

If you struggle to keep fit, resist the urge to cut dairy from your diet. Calcium is essential for normal muscle function, including your heartbeat.

Also the tendency to bleed easily can be a sign that your calcium level is not optimal. With adequate calcium intake, the sticky platelets in your blood form clots to stop blood flow in case of an injury.

Loss of bone density is a natural part of the ageing process, because we lose calcium at a faster rate than we store it. Protect yourself from future problems by keeping your calcium levels topped up.

The best sources of calcium are dairy products like milk and cheese, but you can also cont on sardines and other fish where you eat the bones. Green leafy vegetables and nuts. Soya products like tofu, soya beans and soya milk.
