The International Day of Yoga
The idea of a world yoga day was suggested by the Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi in an UN address. He chose the date of the 21st of June, as it is the longest day of the year in the Northern Hemisphere and shares a special significance in many parts of the world.
Yoga derives from Hindu and Eastern religious practices as a form of meditation and exercise meant to unite mind and body. However, it has spread all over the world even among those not following Eastern religions.
Around the time of International Day of Yoga, there is public promotion of Yoga and education about Yoga in international media, as well as special Yoga events in many countries.
Endorsed by the UN, this year’s theme of International Day of Yoga is “Climate Action” - practicing yoga can provide a solution to climate change. Yoga emphasis on holding postures and slowing down which creates internal balance between body and mind, creates a harmony between ourselves and nature.
The first International Day of Yoga was observed around the world on the 21st of June 2015.
