Low Potassium?

a13.10.17.png
Sometimes low potassium, also called hypokalaemia, is caused when you don't get enough of it in your diet.

Potassium is a type of electrolyte that helps your muscles contract and your nerves and muscles communicate. It keeps your heart beating regularly, while also maintaining the body's growth and keeping the kidneys and other organs working. It helps move needed nutrients into cells while moving waste products out of them.

If you feel unusually tired, your muscles are weak or your heart is racing, you may not get enough potassium. Weakness and fatigue are the most common symptoms of hypokalaemia. Low potassium levels slow down various bodily functions and that includes digestion. When things aren't moving normally, constipation can result.

Potassium has a strong link with heart function and its lack can lead to arrhythmias that can make you feel faint or lightheaded. They can be especially dangerous if you have heart disease.

Also some difficulty in thinking clearly - the so called mental fog - can be a side effect, often leading to depression.

You need 4,700 milligrams of potassium every day. Potassium can be found in sweet potatoes and potatoes, yogurt, beans, bananas, spinach, almonds, tomatoes, avocado and milk. And in integrators, of course. One sweet potato and a portion of beans will cover the daily intake.
