Running In Summer

You want to run but it's seriously hot out there, and it's only getting hotter every year. It is possible, but only with the right gear.

A summer run should include copious amounts of water, but water alone may not be enough to rehydrate. Sweat rids the body of sodium, magnesium, potassium and possibly calcium. A solution of electrolytes (try a cocktail of citrus juice, honey and a pinch of salt diluted with water) will refuel your body.

Expert runners advice to wear woollen socks! An unusual choice, but the best if you want to keep your feet dry. Much better than cotton, not to mention synthetic fibres.

What about a hat? Most of your body-heat escapes through your head, so if you're wearing a hat, you'll trap heat in. The positive side, of course, is sun exposure. To avoid exposure — while simultaneously feeling comfortable and not overheating — opt for a light-weight visor that contains a quick-drying sweat band.

As for a shirt and pants, a moisture-wicking one will give the additional bonus of a sunscreen. Coolmax® fibres come standard with a sun-protection factor (SPF) rating of 15-20.

As for your shoes, all good quality running shoes these days are constructed with breathable technology. Opt for no compromises in the most important choice for a runner.
