The "Italian" Cheese of Valaam
Mozzarella, caciotta, morlacco, smoked ricotta. While you may be familiar with the first item, many non Italian will wonder what the others are.
Russian are about to challenge the ban on Italian cheeses implemented by Putin as a retaliation against the economic sanctions decided over Russia's role in the Ukrainian crisis. The famous christian orthodox monastery of Valaam is about to start a brand new production of very Italian cheeses by December.
The monastery, considered a beacon of spirituality by many Orthodox believers, is situated on an island 22 km off the shore of Ladoga, Europe's largest lake.
One of the brethren has been to Italy for training in cheese-making, all equipment is already in place. Soon Russians will have their own mozzarella, followed by an array of "Italian" delicatessen.
We wonder whether the cultural theft of such a local feature belongs to the Christian tradition.
