Celastrol is a plant-derived substance used in traditional Chinese medicine. Recent scientific research confirms its potential for combating obesity. The chemical compound is indeed able to activate centres in the brain responsible for producing a feelings of fullness.

Isolated from the root extracts of Tripterygium wilfordii and Celastrus regelii, it exhibits antiossidant, antinflammatory and anticancer activities. Celastrol has also shown to possess antidiabetic effects improving whole-body insulin resistance.

Unfortunately the plant shows a risk of toxicity, therefore its use is currently recommended only under strict medical control. Research is under way to isolate its positive effect from the side effects.
